Excitement is building at Purple Lamp as the studio gears up to deliver a remake of Disney Epic Mickey 2. With the release just around the corner on nearly all gaming platforms, we had the opportunity to investigate and participate in activities some of Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed, a revitalized version of Warren Spector's beloved classic that first debuted on the Wii 14 years ago. The Vienna-based studio, in collaboration with publisher THQ Nordic, has shared insights into the enhancements and innovations present in this new iteration. We also had the opportunity to engage with game director Jason Mallett and designer Aleksandra Jarosz during our conversation below.
When asked about the involvement of the original creator, Mallett noted that Warren was part of the journey from the start and expressed considerable trust in their studio. He emphasized that their expertise lies in crafting 3D platformers, referencing last year's release of SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake, highlighting that the essence of this game remains in the 3D platforming realm.
According to the director, the game also incorporates elements of immersive simulation, as Spector prefers to describe it, along with aspects resembling a third-person shooter. Mallett shared that every iteration was presented to Warren for feedback and that he provided valuable insights each time. The director recounted their experience at D23 with Warren, where he expressed that the remake is an improved version of the original—though Mallett humbly noted that he views it more as an evolution over the span of 14 years. Collaborating with Rolf Mohr, the original art director, has also been integral to their creative process, allowing them to maintain the original vision while introducing fresh perspectives.
The improved visuals and gameplay are evident, and as we prepare our comprehensive review of Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed, we couldn't overlook the discussion surrounding its sequel. Mallett assured us that the team at Purple Lamp is keen and ready for the challenge. He fondly reflected on his experience with Epic Mickey and hinted at a desire for future opportunities, stating that it would be wonderful to revisit this universe.
