PlayStation Expands Horizons: Lego Horizon Adventures Coming to Nintendo Switch After 26 Years

After Xbox broadened the availability of its games to multiple platforms, PlayStation is breaking a 26-year streak by bringing its own intellectual property to Nintendo with Lego Horizon Adventures.

PlayStation is launching its IP, Lego Horizon Adventures, on the Nintendo Switch, challenging a long-standing trend.

Xbox has gradually increased the cross-platform presence of its major IPs, notably with Sea of Thieves debuting on PS5 in April. Tango Gameworks' Hi-Fi Rush also became available on PS4 and PS5 in the same month, while Obsidian's Pentiment and Grounded expanded to both PlayStation and Nintendo Switch. A report from February suggested that Starfield, Bethesda's Indiana Jones game, and other Xbox exclusives might be released on PS5, but this is still unconfirmed.

As mentioned by GamesIndustry.biz, Lego Horizon Adventures marks the first time since 1998 that PlayStation has released one of its IPs on a Nintendo platform; the last instance is Wipeout 64 on the N64.

There are a few points to consider for context. Firstly, MLB: The Show, developed by the PlayStation-owned San Diego Studio and published by PlayStation, has been cross-platform since 2021. However, Lego Horizon Adventures is an actual PlayStation IP, forming part of the Horizon series, while MLB The Show is a licensed IP from MLB Advanced Media. Aloy is a PlayStation character, while Major League Baseball players are not.

This brings us to the next significant point. Even though Lego Horizon Adventures features a main character recognized as a PlayStation icon, it is also clearly a Lego crossover game. This fact makes its release on Nintendo Switch less surprising and less indicative of a broader strategy at Sony. It remains a noteworthy release but doesn't have the same impact as, for instance, The Last of Us coming to Xbox or Starfield arriving on PS5. Sony has been warming up to PC recently, but whether Lego Horizon Adventures signals a trend of more PlayStation IP reaching other consoles remains uncertain.
