In the eagerly awaited sequel, Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2, Ninja Theory is concentrating on refining aspects of the game that received critique in its predecessor, particularly the combat mechanics. Emphasizing improvements, the developers have revealed that the sequel will feature combat sequences entirely captured through motion capture technology. This advancement ensures that every action seen by the game's protagonist, Senua, as well as her adversaries, is based on real-life performances, providing a more authentic and immersive experience. Dom Matthews, the head of Ninja Theory, discussed the significance of basing the movement in the game—ranging from running and climbing to combating—on performance capture to achieve a sense of realism and consistency.
Further delving into the combat mechanics, Ninja Theory has intentionally designed each combat scenario in Hellblade 2 to pit Senua against a single opponent. Through this design choice, the developers aim to evoke a sense of being overwhelmed, enhancing the intensity of each encounter. Macon, the combat director, drew inspiration from the "Battle of the Bastards" episode of Game of Thrones, expressing a desire to replicate Jon Snow's reactive and immersive battlefield experience within the game, with the player in full control.
An additional aspect of Hellblade 2 that Ninja Theory is focusing on is to deliver the game at 30 FPS on Xbox Series X/S to achieve a "cinematic" feel, further enhancing the game's visual storytelling and atmosphere. Fans can look forward to experiencing these combat updates and more when Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 releases on May 21 for Xbox Series X/S and PC.
